Teenagers with chest pain

First, pay attention to what the kids complain about and then have the guts to ask the doctor to get a simple blood test.

If your child/teenager has had the shot… and now is complaining of chest pain… Go to your doctor in the Emergency Room and ask for them to draw a troponin level. Troponin is a cardiac enzyme that spills into the blood stream when heart damage has occurred. That could be an occluded coronary artery in grandad with downstream heart muscle loss, or a car wreck with air bag deployment into the chest, or an inflammation of the heart. Thus myocarditis. So unless junior took a hockey puck to the center mass of the chest, or wrecked his car.. he should not have elevated troponin levels. It is an easy blood draw.

If it is positive, then start asking questions about getting a cardiac MRI. My good friend, and fellow ham radio buddy, Dr Mullani was one of the inventors of the cardiac MRI. When it first came out we surgeons sorta said “yeh, we will see.. that looks like a fuzzy-gram to me.” But it has been enhanced and improved tremendously and is clearly a solid part of a good cardiologists practice. To my older surgeons eyes, I would say it is the examination of choice if myocarditis is a concern.

Realize that myocarditis usually affects the outside surface (epicardium) of the heart and or the pericardium. That is the tough sac that surrounds the heart. Inflammation there alone is called pericarditis.

After reading the article ask yourself…. “Why stop testing at 18?” What if a young recruit in the military gets a shot and comes down with chest pain. They should get a troponin and then MRI as indicated above - as well.

The military needs troops to be “worldwide deployable” and there is a rating system for deployability based upon health. If a soldier gets the shot and develops myocarditis - he is not deployable. The enemy would like nothing better than to tie up ten or twelve “REMFs” (ask your Viet Nam vet pop about that definition…) to take care of a sick soldier. It might be so nefarious a problem in military that one might opine that the purveyors of this “jab” silliness actually are/were “enemies of the state” who participated in spreading a bioweapon! Again.. it is not a vaccine - it is a genetic experiment.
