Doctor's dilemma-in these times

Now we have a new crisis

Dr Malone seems to always reflect some of my concerns about patients. At first those of us doctors who were not convinced about the COVID shot (it is not a vaccine!) would be effective, in fact maybe not even safe… we doctors wrung our hands about what to tell patients. I never gave ANYBODY a shot, or wrote orders or instructed anyone to give a shot for the COVID. Generally I told patients I had concerns, to the point that I personally would not take the shot, but they would need to talk to their “regular” doctor.. as if as a triple board certified cardiovascular surgeon I wouldn’t know??

The shots came and went. (And the insanity continues today) What does it take to wake up “corporate/governmental medicine? Some of my patients and some of my friends died from “COVID”.. at least that was what the families relayed to me. At appeared to my evaluation they died of sepsis and cytokine storm in the ICU after being rushed there and put on positive pressure ventilation. — Or was it the shot?

But I personally avoided the shot and timed my otherwise planned retirement from the operating room with a wink and a nod saying “49 years of doing cardiovascular surgery should be enough. Adios” So therefore unlike my younger colleagues, I did not have to struggle with a personal decision to fight hospital administration about the shot. I had retired in about 2000 from the military after getting shots off and on as “vaccinations” over the thirty years I spent in a blue USAFR uniform. So I was well away from that military worry. I even got revaccinated in my county in the early 2000 time frame against smallpox - again, still sporting a round scar on my arm- from third grade. We really worried in the military that somewhere, some nefarious twit had squirreled away some small pox virus and indeed it hadn’t been eliminated from the earth.. and we worried it could be weaponized and used again… yes about a 35% mortality but highly infectious- and YES, the US Army had used it in the late 19th century against our own indigenous Indian tribes. It had been and continues to be a potent bioweapon. So I volunteered to get a re-vaccination in my 50s to be a designated “vaccinator” in my county. So I am clearly NOT “Anti-vaxx”.

But - clearly I bucked the system when it came to COVID. Now retired I continually get calls from friends, family and ex-patients about medical advice although I don’t do surgery any more. Let’s say I have a rolodex of friends who I trust with my own person, my family etc and I am not afraid to recommend solid surgeons. So my patient rapport continues… and now I am faced with “Doc - I got the shot and now…..” or My family got the shot and “ my (fill in the blank.. child, wife” has medical problems the doctors cannot figure out. In the last month added to that is “——and I think it may have been the shot”. Dang. what do I say. I really avoid saying “Told/You/So.” That doesn’t help anybody. But really, our hands are tied. We don’t have a clue. This indeed was an EXPERIMENTAL shot and we are all enrolled in the world-wide human experiment. I am a “control group” lab rat…. got the “placebo” so to speak.
