This disease still haunts us

Most agree that the Covid pandemic is basically over. But wait- people are still sick.. seemingly brushed of as Post-Covid or Long Covid problems. Then a secondary brushfire starts as pro and con advocates of vaccines have arguments about whether the vaccinated are more likely to get Long Covid (they probably are)- and thus a deeper question. Was it the shot that caused the long covid..??

The real discussion should actually be about “informed consent”. We learned about that after WWII when the Nuremberg Trials left a few Nazis swinging on ropes and a general consensus of a basic Hippocratic oath violation when doctors gave something to patients that actually harms them. Not just the ouch pinprick of a needle - but something worse.. Like the marked elevation of numbers of glioblastoma multiforme in those of us (my age) who got the polio shot. Yes the Salk vaccine. Made with monkey kidney cells carrying a cancer gene apparently. I was taught in medical school at UTMB in the 60s that “even a neurosurgeon will probably only see one glioblastoma multiforme (astrocytoma grade 4) in their whole career. It is so rare!” Well —not so today. But in all honesty - disease does change with time. Gastric cancer was very common, usually thought to be due to chronic ulcers…true. But lo and behold a doctor in the northeast was talking to a veterinarian friend who related that farmers gave their cows antibiotics to keep them from getting ulcers. So the MD thought. “let’s try this”.. Now the informed consent was easy. “We have this antibiotic that is proven to be safe.. so let’s try it on your ulcer.” For his efforts, the State board of medicine took away his MD license (sound familiar?? with the State boards like California that take away a license for spreading “disinformation!” - And yes we decide what is disinformation. Sounds kinda Hitlerish to me.). The doctor went to Australia, finished his research, and we now have a clearly defined H.pylori related ulcer situation, easily treated with antibiotics and bismuth (think pepto-Bismol). The doctor was right. He did not get the Nobel Prize.

So along comes the m-RNA shot - as a doctor (a simple heart surgeon with three boards and yes a professor of surgery - me) I think— wait a minute…I am not convinced. As Dr John Kirklin used to say from his teaching chair on rounds “Show me the data”.. Reasonable.. scientific. So I avoided the shot. Now - we know that many serious side effects, illness and death are clearly related to the shot.. probably would have been better if we had a much smaller group, studied closely before giving millions of shots. If anything, the population that avoided this mass insanity were the American blacks who had a long memory and remembered the “Tuskegee Experiment.” Black men were purposefully not treated when diagnosed with syphillis. The ravages of that disease were recorded. It was awful. When I took my CDC required course to be a “Principle Investigator” for medical research - even retrospective chart audit studies.. we had to relearn that… every three years to keep doing research. It emphasized the importance of proper informed consent.

Then - along comes Bobby… Not me - not Bobby the heart surgeon, but Robert F. Kennedy Jr.. Bobby to his family. I heard him do an interview with Megan Kelly while I was making the two hour drive to Dallas a couple years ago. I was so impressed with his biological and immunological knowledge. I am so glad he is making a solid push as the Democrat presidential nominee. He and I may disagree on several other social issues and topics.. but no reason not to have a solid Democrat candidate -
